The 1st Workshop on Self-Aware Computing Systems (SeAC) co-located with ICAC 2017 will take place on July 17-18, 2017 in Columbus, Ohio, USA and is organized by the Chair of Software Engineering (Informatik II) with Prof. Samuel Kounev and Nikolas Herbst serving as co-organizers.

A new book "Self-Aware Computing Systems" by Samuel Kounev, Jeffrey O. Kephart, Aleksandar Milenkoski and Xiaoyun Zhu has been published by Springer as a standalone advanced text book.

24.09.2016 – A Milestone for DML

A new journal paper "Model-Based Self-Aware Performance and Resource Management Using the Descartes Modeling Language" has been accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE). The Descartes Modeling Language (DML) is a major product of our group used in a number of projects.

An article in IEEE Computer Magazine summarizes the results of our DFG Emmy Noether Project "Descartes". A major output of this project was the development of the Descartes Modeling Language (DML), which provides a foundation for self-aware quality-of-service and resource management in modern IT systems and infrastructures.

Prof. Dr. Samuel Kounev has decided to stay in Würzburg after receiving an offer for a Professorship position (Full Professor and Chair for Reliable Software Systems) at the University of Stuttgart.

The 13th IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing took place in Würzburg from July 18th to July 22nd, 2016 and has been organized by the Chair of Software Engineering (Informatik II) with Prof. Samuel Kounev serving as General Chair.

A SPECtacular Award was presented to Aleksandar Milenkoski by the President of SPEC at the SPEC Annual Meeting 2016 in Freemont, California, USA.

Mit dem Google Research Award erhalten Professor Samuel Kounev und sein Wissenschaftlerteam einen hochdotierten Preis für ihre Forschung. Die Würzburger Informatiker setzten sich mit ihrem Projekt zur effizienteren Serverauslastung gegen 800 andere Bewerber aus 48 Ländern durch.

Unternehmen könnten Geld und Zeit sparen, wenn sich die Leistungsfähigkeit ihrer Software-Systeme in einem automatisierten Prozess abbilden ließe. An diesem Ziel arbeiten Informatiker unseres Lehrstuhls in Kooperation mit Forschern der ABB AG.

19.08.2015 – Google Research Award

The Chair of Software Engineering (Prof. Dr. Samuel Kounev) is starting a new collaboration with Google as part of a Google Research Award on the topic of "On-the-fly resource demand estimation during system operation".

Dr.-Ing. Fabian Brosig received this year's Best Dissertation Award at KIT's (Karlsruhe Insitute of Technology) Faculty of Informatics, sponsored by Uniserv GmbH (2500 €), for his PhD thesis supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Samuel Kounev.

An article co-authored by Aleksandar Milenkoski, researcher at the Chair of Software Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Samuel Kounev has been accepted for publication in ACM Computing Surveys. The article is entitled "Evaluating Computer Intrusion Detection Systems: A Survey of Common Practices".

An article co-authored by Simon Spinner, Fabian Brosig, and Prof. Dr. Samuel Kounev has been accepted for publication in the Elsevier Performance Evaluation journal. The article is entitled "Evaluating Approaches to Resource Demand Estimation".

The Chair of Software Engineering made major contributions to a Technical Report on a research agenda for performance-oriented DevOps published by the SPEC as part of its ongoing collaboration with the SPEC RG DevOps Performance Working Group.

LIMBO, a tool for load intensity pattern modeling, is now part of the SPEC RG's tool repository. BUNGEE, a benchmarking framework for cloud elasticity, is now released under open source license. Both tools were presented at the 10th International Symposium on Software Engineering for Adaptive and Self-Managing Systems (SEAMS) 2015.

The Dagstuhl Seminar 15041 on "Model-driven Algorithms and Architectures for Self-Aware Computing Systems", co-organized by Prof. Samuel Kounev from Jan 18-23, brought together 45 international experts from the areas of software engineering, systems modeling & analysis, autonomic computing, and data center resource management. Jóakim v. Kistowski, doctoral researcher at the Chair of Software Engineering (Informatik II), wins this year's GFFT Prize 2015 for Best Master Thesis, given by the Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Forschungstransfers e.V.

The RELATE Winter School on Engineering and Provisioning of Cloud Applications – Research and Entrepreneurship was successfully hosted by the Department of Computer Science. The 12th IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC'15), co-organized by Samuel Kounev as Program Committee Co-Chair, will be held in Grenoble, France, July 7-10, 2015. The paper submission deadline is January 22 (abstracts due on Jan 15).

The 16th GAMM-IMACS International Symposium on Scientific Computing, Computer Arithmetic and Validated Numerics (SCAN'14), organized by Prof. Wolff von Gudenberg as General Chair, was held at the University of Würzburg from 21st to 26th September, 2014 and attracted over 80 international researchers from more than 18 countries.

Our latest research on quantitative evaluation of service dependability in shared execution environments was presented at FLORENCE 2014 - a joint scientific event of QEST 2014, SAFECOMP 2014, FORMATS 2014, EPEW 2014 and FMICS 2014. The presentation slides are available for download.

The 5th Multi-Skills Training Camp (MSTC) of the RELATE Marie Curie Initial Training Network, coordinated by Samuel Kounev, was held in the premises of the University of Rennes 1, France from 25 to 27 June 2014, and hosted by the Inria Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique Research Centre.

Herbst forscht am Lehrstuhl für Informatik II; er beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung von Software-Systemen, die autonom auf veränderte Bedingungen reagieren können.

Software-Systeme, die drohende Probleme frühzeitig erkennen und ohne menschliches Eingreifen selbstständig die erforderlichen Maßnahmen ergreifen: Diese Vision verfolgt Samuel Kounev. Der Professor leitet seit Kurzem den Lehrstuhl für Informatik II an der Universität Würzburg.

Nachdem am Lehrstuhl kurz vor dem Jahreswechsel die letzten inhaltlichen Aktualisierungen für den Glasmaster vorgenommen wurden, ist nun seit kurzem die neue HagerROM im Handel erhältlich. Die im Jahresrhythmus herausgegebenen HagerROM-DVDs erscheinen seit dem Jahr 2001 in Kooperation mit dem Springer-Verlag in Heidelberg. Diese für ein Software-Produkt schon recht lange Lebenszeit nimmt sich allerdings bescheiden aus gegenüber der Gesamtdauer des Hager-Projekts. Die ersten Bände von "Hagers Handbuch der Pharmazeutischen Praxis" wurden durch den Apotheker Hans Hermann Julius Hager beim Springer-Verlag in Berlin vor mehr als 135 Jahren publiziert.
