06/13/2018Aleksandar Milenkoski from the Chair of Software Engineering is this year's winner of the SPEC Kaivalya Dixit Distinguished Dissertation Award presented at the ACM/SPEC ICPE 2018 Conference in Berlin. Nikolas Herbst received a SPECtacular Award from SPEC for technical leadership.
The winning dissertation – Evaluation of Intrusion Detection Systems for Virtualized Environments – was authored by Aleksandar Milenkoski at the Chair for Software Engineering (Informatik II), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Samuel Kounev. The selection committee appreciated the novel repurposing of performance evaluation tools for characterizing Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). They were also highly impressed with the systematic and structured approach to research and evaluation. In particular, they commend the careful statistical work in the evaluation experiments and the technically deep investigation of IDS issues in virtualized environments.
The award was presented at the International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE) in Germany in April 2018. Twitter

The SPEC Distinguished Dissertation Award was established in 2011 to recognize outstanding dissertations within the scope of the SPEC Research Group. It was renamed in 2016 to Kaivalya Dixit Distinguished Dissertation Award in memory of Kaivalya Dixit , SPEC’s longtime President). Contributions of interest span the design of metrics for system evaluation as well as the development of methodologies, techniques and tools for measurement, load testing, profiling, workload characterization, dependability and efficiency evaluation of computing systems. Dissertations defended between October 2017 and September 2018 will be eligible to be nominated for the 2018 award. This year, the award committee considered 13 excellent dissertation submissions from universities around the world.
Furthermore, Nikolas Herbst was honored with a SPECtacular presented by SPEC's President David Reiner (AMD) during the conference banquet. This recognition of service award was given for technical leadership and dedication to the SPEC Research Group.
